LAWRENCE HALPRIN POSTER

The goal was to create a poster that annonced the lecture, and also honored the amazing work of Lawrence Halprin through its design. Many of Halprin’s designs were for public parks and spaces, and I wanted to incorporate some of the fascinating and unorthodox ways he created these places for the public.  I also wanted the posters to stand out  in a variety of different campus and city environments. I also wanted the poster to look good as a stand alone single copy, or grouped together with multiple copies.

Lawrence Halprin – Landscape Architect Lecture Series

The Client

The University of Oregon School of Architecture does a series of lectures every year on notable figures in architechture. The series has nationally and internationally recognized figures, academics, and historians visit and speak. This year they are expanding the series to also include landscape architects. They have requested a poster for the event highlighting Lawrence Halprin, a world renowned landscape architect, designer, and educator. They want the poster to be bold and eye-catching. They would also like the poster to incorporate his work in some way. The posters will be hung up around campus, and also around the city of Eugene, Oregon.

The Problem

The challenge was to create a poster that not only announced the lecture, but also honored Halprin’s groundbreaking work in landscape architecture. The design needed to capture the essence of his innovative designs for public parks and spaces, while standing out in various environments.

The Outcome

This poster is based directly on the aerial plans of Lovejoy Fountain Park in Portland, Oregon. The concrete construction and hard angles are offset by flowing water that cascades down multiple levels, and it is crossed by irregular shaped steps. I wanted to capture the flow of Lawrence Halprin’s inspired work, and give the poster  a sense of movement. I also tried to capture the abstract nature of his work.
